Concern for Youth focusing on community outreach, helping young people

Local area teens and younger children dealing with a difficult situation or needing someone to talk with can always pick up the phone and call Battlefords Concern for Youth for support.

Executive director Jenna Holt said she hopes to raise awareness about the non-profit organization’s role in helping vulnerable young people in North Battleford and Battleford.

The organization is continuing to focus its attention on its community outreach work heading into the winter season.

The Concern for Youth vehicle travels throughout the Battlefords and will stop to help any youth from ages five to 19 in need of assistance.

The organization is based out of an office in the Don Ross Centre in North Battleford.

Holt said outreach workers are out in the community driving around Mondays to Fridays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“We’re definitely still out there; if any youth see us they can wave us down, and we’ll talk to them,” Holt said.

She added that in the winter the team does see a decrease in the number youth requiring assistance after 6 p.m., since there are fewer young people out and about as it becomes darker earlier in the day.

If any individuals have questions about the Concern for Youth program they can call the office at any time for information.

“We want to get out there what we do. So if anyone does have a question, when you see the van just wave them down,” Holt said.

As part of its mandate, the organization helps vulnerable and at-risk youth. It also assists any young persons needing support.

“We would work with any youth who wishes to approach us,” Holt said. “We’re all about building relationships and having those healthy relationships within the community.”

She said the Concern for Youth van will also drive a youth home or to an appointment if needed.

“They could call our outreach workers and they could provide that,” Holt added.

However, she wants people to keep in mind it is not a taxi service, but “we definitely want to make sure that kids get home safely.”

“That’s definitely part of our mandate, to keep kids safe,” Holt added.

Concern for Youth can also arrange referrals for youth with mental health issues, and those needing support from other services or programs available in the community.
