Titans play part in community dinner

The Prince Albert Junior B Titans are known for their great work on the ice, but they also do great work in the community.

The team gathered Dec. 5 at the Indian Métis Friendship Centre to play their part to help serve food to those in need in time for the Christmas season.

Geoff Despins, manager of Prince Albert Grand Council Urban Services told paNOW this community dinner has taken place for roughly 15 years, and he hopes to see it continue for another 15.

“Every year we serve roughly 300 to 500 people, and we expect to see the same amount this year,” Despins said. “We realize Christmas can be a very stressful and difficult time and we hope as many people as possible are able to enjoy a great meal and hopefully create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for everyone.”

Despins added this event is something his staff look forward to yearly, and is a good way to give back to the community.

Organizers of the event start to plan proceedings months before, and have received support from key stakeholders including Prince Albert Grand Council and their leadership, Northern Lights Community Development Corporation, Northern Lights Casino, Prince Albert Indian and Metis Friendship Center.

For this year there were volunteers from PAGC Urban Services, Northern Lights Casino, Prince Albert City Police, as well as groups of students from Wahpeton. There was also help from Corrections Services.

Wayne Mesenchuk, president and general manager of the Prince Albert Titans Junior B Hockey Club, told paNOW his players had a great opportunity to help those less fortunate, and he believes it was a great opportunity for all those involved.

“This is something that our team believes in greatly, having our players out here to help and assist and meet people is a great way to give back to the community,” Mesenchuk said. “We always look forward to helping out at Christmas time. This is our second year helping out, and we will also have a few of our players helping out at the hockey school going on next week.”

Roughly 400 people attended the dinner.
