RCMP investigate woman’s death at Muskeg Lake

A woman’s death last weekend on the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation is considered suspicious, according to RCMP.

Joanne Wolfe-Lafond, 56, was found unresponsive outside her home early Sunday afternoon. EMS personnel were already present when officers arrived around 12:50 p.m. Lafond was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An autopsy was conducted in Regina on January 16.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit North continues to investigate with assistance from Spiritwood, Shellbrook and Blaine Lake RCMP, North Battleford Forensic Identification Section, Saskatoon Police Dog Services and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.

paNOW learned Lafond is the mother of Chief Kelly Wolfe, who was not available for comment. The director of operations for the band is expected to release a statement sometime today.

In the meantime community members who have contacted paNOW, have asked why there was no public alert issued, with a possible murdererer on the run. Cpl. Rob King said there was no need to issue one as there was no perceived threat to public safety.

“At this point this investigation is not believed to be connected to any other incidents that happened in or near the community,” he said.

King said no arrests have been at this time, and the investigation is still in its infancy stage.
