École St. Mary set to host SWISH for a cure game

The École St. Mary Marauders and the Carlton Crusaders senior girls basketball teams will be taking to the court Tuesday evening for a special game.

The Marauders will be hosting the Crusaders in the SWISH for a Cure game. The team from École St. Mary will be playing in pink jerseys.

Dwayne Gareau, who coaches the senior girls’ team, told paNOW how the game came about.

“It’s not an annual event in terms of you do it every year,” Gareau said. “How it works is you’re invited to play against a team and then you pay it forward to a team and they bring the game to their community. We were invited to North Battleford last year, they bought us pink jerseys for our game this year,” he said.

Besides wearing the pink jerseys to raise awareness, the game will also act as a fundraiser. There will be a silent auction, raffle and people will be asked to pay to be admitted to the game. Gareau said they’ve already been hard at work raising money. Students have also had the chance to buy pink shirts to show their support.

All money raised will go to the Victoria Hospital Foundation to support the purchase of some much-needed new equipment for the Victoria Hospital.

“We’re going to be purchasing as many CADD pumps as possible for the Victoria Hospital Foundation. The machines run from anywhere from three to four hundred, we’re hoping to raise enough money to buy, three, four, five,” said Gareau.

Gareau said the equipment can be helpful to those battling cancer. The pumps can also be used by people who are working outside of a hospital setting.

“Those CADD pumps administer medication and stuff for those patients who are dealing with the pain of cancer,” he said.

Gareau said they are hoping to raise between $10,000 and $15,000. He said even before the game has been played, there has been a good amount of money raised.

“We’re almost already at our base, so we’re getting there,” he said.

The game will tip off at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at École St. Mary. Next year Carlton will be hosting their own game.
