John William Merriman
(1919 – 2017)
Drew his first breath in heaven after peacefully leaving his home in Keremeos, B.C Feb 21, just days after celebrating his 98th birthday with friends and family. John was born Feb 17th in Des Moines, Iowa, one of 5 children born to William and Alice Merriman. After living in England, he and his parents moved to Canada in 1927, farming and growing up at Birch Hills Saskatchewan. After serving as a Signal Corpsman in England, Italy and North Africa during WWII , John returned to Saskatchewan where he met and married Doris Hickey, beginning their life together at Paddockwood. Their union was graced with 7 children. In 1990 John and Doris moved to Keremeos . Left to cherish his memory are his children Allyson (Henry) Brown; Bonnie (Pat) Mahoney; David (Judy) Merriman; Daughter in law Veronica Merriman; Cynthia (Vernon) Armstrong; Grant (Lynnette) Merriman; Margaret (Jeffrey) Simpson; 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. John is survived by a sister in law Janice (Charles) Horvath, a stepsister Verla (Bill) Wildey as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Doris (2004), son Denis (1989). A celebration of life will be held in LaRonge, Sask. at a later date with his ashes to be interred beside Doris in LaRonge Cemetary.
