Gang-related charges added to pair accused in Makwa Sahgaiehcan fire

The two young men accused of manslaughter and arson in connection with a fatal Jan. 7 fire on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation each have new gang-related charges against them.

Shandon Chief, 18, and Skye Noltcho, 19, briefly appeared in court on Monday, Feb. 5. The two accused are from the First Nation, and both are charged with manslaughter and arson with disregard for human life. Crown added the charges of committing the indictable offences of manslaughter and arson for the benefit of a criminal organization, which in this case is the Terror Squad gang.

In the early morning hours of Jan. 7, a house fire broke on the reserve. Loon Lake RCMP said several individuals escaped the home, but a woman was not unaccounted for at that time. Two days later, a body was found in the home, and on Wednesday, Jan. 10, an autopsy confirmed the woman’s identity as Kristen Faye Cantre, 32.

Noltcho is set to appear again in Meadow Lake provincial court for a bail hearing on Feb. 20, and Chief will appear in Loon Lake provincial court on Feb. 22. The defence lawyers for both with be making a case for their releases in a show cause hearing.
