Medical students taking field trip to M.L. Provincial Park

University of Saskatchewan medical students expect to expand their skills when they head to the Meadow Lake Provincial Park this weekend to learn about wilderness medicine techniques.

The day trip is the next stop of the Saskatchewan Medical Association’s (SMA) Roadmap Program for Students and Residents.

Excited and grateful for the opportunity to showcase what medical practice looks like in Meadow Lake, local Dr. Stephen Loden said this is an important trip for students

“It’s important for medical students to be exposed to the breadth of practice opportunities in medicine including family medicine and rural family medicine,” Loden said. “We think it’s best to give them that exposure early on in their training.”

The SMA organizes four one-day tours each year for medical students and family medicine residents. They tour the community, take in a local event, and spend some time with local physicians learning about their medical practices.

The goal of the tours is to increase the number of University of Saskatchewan graduates to remain in the province for their practices.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, roughly 50 medical students will travel to Meadow Lake to tour the hospital and community before heading out to Meadow Lake Provincial Park.

The afternoon will be spent learning about search and rescue, and practising medical skills outdoors. The students will have an opportunity to talk to local physicians and family medicine residents about what it’s like to work in Meadow Lake. Local paramedics and volunteer firefighters will also be working with the students.

“We want to provide a unique experience that highlights the local area and its outdoor recreation, with a clinical spin,” Loden added.

The students are expected to arrive in Meadow Lake at 10 a.m., tour the hospital, and leave for the provincial park at noon.
