RCMP: Series of Edam fires "considered suspicious"

Jun 13, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Three recent fires to businesses in the village of Edam have been deemed as suspicious, according to the Turtleford Detachment of the RCMP.

“The RCMP are investigating three structure fires which occurred over the past seven months in the community of Edam,” wrote Sgt. Ron Robinson of the Turtleford RCMP in response to inquiries made by battlefordsNOW.  “All three fires are considered suspicious and the investigation to date has yielded no evidence of a connection between them.”

The first fire occurred on Dec. 14 2016 when the village’s only grocery store, the Edam General Store on Main Street, was destroyed in an early morning blaze. The second fire occurred at a business on Highway #26 in Edam on April 13.

The most recent fire took place at the Rendezvous Hotel on June 4.

Edam Fire Chief Ray Seipp said the call came in for the fire at the hotel at 9:30 p.m. and both the Turtleford Fire Department and Edam Department were on the scene for over three and a half hours.

“No one was staying in the hotel at the time of the fire,” Seipp said. ”There was significant damage to the hotel as well.”

There has been growing concern in the community of 480 due to the number of fires in the small town. However, Sgt. Robinson said the RCMP are still investigating the fires.

“We take all investigations seriously and thankfully no one was injured as a result of these fires,” Sgt. Robinson continued. ”I encourage anyone in the community who has information about these fires or anyone who would like to voice their concerns to contact the Turtleford Detachment.”
