Children’s parade used as teachable moment

A parade of students from Westview Community School paraded down Central Avenue with drums and signs Thursday afternoon to send a message about children’s rights.

The ‘Kids Matter’ idea is the brainchild of Grade 4 teacher Paula Thiesen.

“The students did research to find out human rights are protected for children by United Nations and it went from there,” Thiesen said. “We wanted to make a public statement that children and youth in Prince Albert are important in this community and deserve to have input into community planning and opportunities for the future.”

“Kids matter and they shouldn’t be treated badly. Our opinions matter,” Grade 4 student Granger Hoffman said.

Hoffman said he planned to participate in more community activities to have his voice heard and volunteer by picking up garbage.

Members of Prince Albert city council, the local fire and police department and MLA Nicole Rancourt were on hand for the event which wrapped up with a lunchtime barbecue in Memorial Square.

Thiesen said she hopes the event will grow to become an annual affair with students from various schools across the city.

“The kids are pumped to know they have the power to make change,” she said.
