More than 500 pets in Saskatchewan are looking for new homes and animal shelters across the province are banding together to make it happen.

On Aug. 19 the Prince Albert SPCA and other facilities in the province are reducing adoption fees on cats and dogs as part of an initiative called “Empty Our Shelters.”

Over 100 cats and more than 60 dogs are waiting to be adopted from the Prince Albert SPCA.

“We have a huge influx of animals right now because of the season,” Kathleen Howell from the Prince Albert SPCA said. “We’re offering lower rates on the animals to try and help people enhance their homes with that furry friend.”

Dogs will be available for adoption starting at $237, a saving of $50. Adoption for cats start at $20 but it’s up to potential owners to decide how much they would like to donate.

Pets who are adopted from the SPCA come spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped or tattooed. A complementary vet checkup is also provided within 30 days of adopting a new pet. Howell said education about spaying and neutering pets is also provided on site.

For families who may not have room for new pet, you’re still invited to visit the shelter and sign up to volunteer at the SPCA satellite location in the Gateway Mall.

The SPCA will be open between 11:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
