Meadow Lake’s Tim Hortons store has high hopes to make the fundraising committee of the Northland Pioneers Lodge smile a lot this year.

Every year for a week September, Tim Hortons stores across the country sell $1 Smile Cookies for local charities. The last two years, the funds raised at the Meadow Lake store have gone to support the new Northlands Pioneer Lodge. This year’s campaign is hopping in the community so far, according to co-manager and owner, Phil Lefevre who runs the store with his sister Kim.

“They sold 853 cookies [on Wednesday alone],” he said. “That surpassed last year by 400 cookies for the whole week. It surprised us as well, I was just absolutely amazed, and it’ll be nice to see what the end result is this year.”

He said the staff has been doing a great job promoting, and the fundraising committee for the lodge has been doing a lot of promotion as well.

Guelda Wood, chairperson of the committee, said the group is very thankful to be chosen this year again.

“It’s just awesome,” said Wood. “For a new business to come in here like that, to pick our fundraising efforts to donate to, it just gives to the whole community. Everyone partakes some way with the pioneer lodge, with family and loved ones.”

One of the fundraising committee members, Gerri Moeller, put out a call on Facebook and actually delivered a number of cookies to local businesses around town.

“They actually ran out of cookie dough [on Wednesday],” said Wood. “It’s really going over well, and the local staff is great. I really appreciate that – the hometown feeling and people helping us to get this facility we so desperately need.”

The committee is working on raising $2.5 million for furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the new lodge, and are currently sitting at about $700,000.

Wood said she is hoping many more Meadow Lakers partake in the campaign which runs to Sunday, Sept. 17.

“They are really good cookies, and donating to the lodge for a dollar – you can’t get any better than that.”
