Top Relay for Life team recognized, more details on venue change

Collecting nearly $12,000, the top Relay for Life team was recognized at a special event Tuesday afternoon.

Kicking Cancer, through a number of fundraising efforts, brought in $11,563.90 of the over $130,000 raised in 2017.

“Our main focus was to help go towards cancer research,” LeeAnn Walker said as she held the large glass trophy. 

Her teammate and team founder Tracy Garneau started the team three years ago when her father was diagnosed with cancer. Almost each of the over 20 members of the team has been touched by the illness in some way.

“We just want to keep coming in first and raising as much as we can,” Garneau said as she laughed. “It is a goal to always raise the most in whatever ways we need it.”

Changes for next year

Event Chair Lyle Karasiuk awarded the trophy at Kinsmen Park, the new location of the fundraiser in 2018. 

Next year will also run from noon to midnight. The change comes in part due to the fact the event would have also conflicted with 2018 provincial high school track and field championships that weekend.

The time charges are also aimed to attract more teams. Karasiuk said many people would leave the event well before midnight and some school teams could not stay overnight. He believes a shorter time span will raise attendance. 

“It is going to be an incredible opportunity for us to be here,” he said. 

In the hopes of creating a more festival atmosphere, the location will have a large stage for more entertainment possibilities.
