City of M.L. to offer rebate on purchase of compost bins

Meadow Lake residents can receive a partial rebate when buying their own household compost bins, thanks to a new policy voted in by city council this week.

In 2009, the city purchased a bulk order of 220 compost bins, and have been steadily selling roughly 20 bins a year at a price of $25 each. Currently, six or seven are left in stock. Rather than ordering a new supply, the city’s rebate program will reward people who choose to compost according to City Manager Diana Burton.

“Once those original ones are gone, what we’re changing to is a rebate,” she said. “If people go out and buy composting bins from a local store, they can bring their receipt [to city hall] and get a rebate for $25. It’s a voluntary program for people who want to do compositing at their home.”

The new policy will not take effect until the rest of the city’s bins have been purchased, but once the current stock is depleted the city will communicate with local retailers to let them know this policy and rebate is in place.
