The city of Prince Albert honoured its most artistic residents with a first of its kind photo contest.

The city sought photos which promote the use of different facilities and spaces, or “which make Prince Albert a great place to live.” The theme of the photo contest was Kistahpinanihk, which translates from Cree as “the meeting place.”

According city communications manager Kiley Bear, nine winners were selected from over 300 entries.

“The photos we received will be used to promote Prince Albert’s Municipal Cultural Action Plan,” Bear said. “These photos are an asset for us and we appreciate everyone that participated.”

The Action Plan identifies how the city can become a stronger cultural community through supporting arts, preserving heritage and enhancing tourism.

Rick Orr took both second and third place. Among other winners and honourable mentions were Jean Laurent Fournier, Donald Meiklejohn and Terra Braun.

Special events had its own category, where the Street Fair, Summit Run and Culture Days were represented. Orr placed in the Culture Days category alongside Lorraine Brokop. Lisa Lester placed in the Summit Run category. Donna Thiels and Melissa Poulin placed first and second in the Street Fair category, respectively.

Thiels said she brought her camera along with her to the street fair for fun, and entered the photo contest to see how her shot would place. She didn’t expect to win and said it was “quite cool” she won the category.

Duane Krip, submitted the grand prize winning photograph titled “Fall Baseball Under the Lights,” which he snapped while his kids were playing at Prime Ministers Park.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to capture a moment in time of your kids’ life, and be acknowledged for it; that’s awesome,” Krip said. “We document the life of our kids, every event that they’re in, everything that they do, we’re out there taking photos, so it’s just great to have the acknowledgement.”

Krip said he hoped his photograph inspires more kids to pick up a bat and try baseball.

Photos earned points based on the inclusion of people, where the photo was taken, how identifiable the location is, and overall clarity of the photograph.
