It’s more than just a new office space, it’s a new start and home base for the Rural Municipality of Meadow Lake.

While the building was available for use in early Nov. 2017, a celebration of the new addition was held this past weekend. A number of residents of the region visited the open house held this past Saturday, Jan. 27.

The new building features space for offices, including Chief Administrative Officer Gina Bernier, Financial Officer Laurie Lehoux and an open front desk area for receptionist Barbara Galger, as well as spaces for interns and support staff. The front foyer features pictures new and old of various staff and elected officials from the present and past.

“I was happy that a number of people showed up,” Reeve Tim McKay said. “There’s a lot of work that goes on here on a daily basis from our very capable staff. People that went for the tour through the building now realize some of what goes on. Public works, making sure we stay on budget, next year’s budget. And that’s only a couple things.”

The building is also equipped with a backup generator, which McKay said is an important feature, especially since the boardroom which features a table for council meetings is large enough to double as a centre for emergencies.

“If there is an emergency, we need a spot to have a command centre,” he said. “We needed the space so people will be able to communicate, and our emergency coordinator will be able to organize what’s going on.”

Construction on the $1.2 million structure began in April 2017, and McKay said staff and council were very pleased with the contractor, Bexson Construction out of Lloydminster for finishing the project ahead of schedule and on budget. It was originally projected to open in December but was ready a month ahead of schedule.

“It’s an investment, but one that is going to last us for the next several decades,” he said.
