Parkland Ambulance offers babysitting courses

Parkland Ambulance is offering a babysitter course April 21 for young people interested in making some extra money this coming summer.

They are offering courses for children aged 11 to 16, where they can learn all the skills that go into taking care of kids.

Lyle Karasiuk, with Parkland Ambulance, said there’s a lot more to babysitting than meets the eye.

“Babysitters are not just simply finding the right book, making sure the kids don’t get into trouble or going outside and supervising them. We’re going to give them lots of great first aid skills.”

He says the course will also prepare the future sitters for other types of emergency situations.

“It’s making sure how you contact the family while they are gone. Do the kids have any allergies, or what if heaven forbid there is an emergency at home and you smell smoke? Who else do you contact besides 911, and where do you go?”

Karasiuk said the course is a great way to get ready for the incoming summer months where there will be lots of babysitting opportunities. The skills are especially valuable if the 11-to-16-year-olds have younger siblings that they will need to take care of this summer while parents are at work or away, he added.

Anyone interested can register by noon Friday through Parkland Ambulance, but there are courses offered every other month if you miss this one.
