East Central School celebrating memories, years past with annual walkathon

Memories of years past and fun times at East Central School will be shared as the school gets set to host its annual walkathon Friday.

Celebrating 50 years this year, the annual walkathon has long been an important fundraiser for the school, located about 10 minutes east of Prince Albert along Highway 302. This year, organizers are planning a reunion event as well, inviting former staff, parents and students to join them for the walkathon, followed by a barbecue lunch and an afternoon of activities.

Pam Grassick, who teaches at East Central School and is helping to organize the reunion event, said the walkathon has long been a main fundraiser for the school and after 50 years, organizers wanted to do something special. Activities are planned for the whole day Friday, following the walkathon in the morning.

“It is our one major fundraiser that we do every year to raise money for extra things that we do with the students or for things that we have at the school,” Grassick said. “The afternoon will be filled with indoor and outdoor activities for the students, as well as in the gym we will have tables set up for guests to reminisce, look at photo albums and pictures of the past.”

East Central School opened in 1953. The school burned down in 1974 and was rebuilt the following year, with renovations and additions taking place in 1984. The school’s current principal, Joanne Tournier, was herself a student at East Central School as a child.

With a long history in the local area, Grassick said East Central School is a still a big part of the community, with various groups renting the facility on a regular basis for events. Organizers are hoping for nice weather for the event on Friday, as there will be some outdoor games as part of the activities. She said well over 100 people have already registered.

Grassick said anyone interested in joining in the festivities Friday is welcome to come on out.
