Melfort fire department recruiting new members

Melfort Fire and Rescue is making a call for new members to join their ranks.

Applications are currently being accepted for paid on call volunteer firefighters which would increase the department to 22 members.

Fire chief Jason Everitt said there are a few minimum requirements for applicants.

“The big things are 18, no criminal record and they need to be releasable,” Everitt said.

Being releasable means that members need to have support from their employer in case a call comes in while they are at work.

An additional requirement would be to live 10 minutes from the fire hall to ensure a fast response time in the case of an overnight or weekend call.

Historically the department is 20 members according to Everitt.

“We had the opportunity to hire two last year and through the budget process we have been given the go-ahead to hire an additional two more this year,” Everitt said.

Paid on-call-firefighters do not receive a regular wage but they do get paid for the calls they respond to and for training.

“We are seeing our coverage area expanding and our call volume increasing so we want to make sure we have enough members to meet the needs of the community,” Everitt said.

Interested applicants can get more information and forms at city hall.
