Former Carlton Principal aims to crusade for Ward 7

A longtime educator in Prince Albert has joined this fall’s municipal election race.

Dawn Kilmer has put her name forward to run in Ward 7. Kilmer, a former principal at Carlton Comprehensive High School, explained to paNOW the idea of crossing over into politics has been on her mind the past four or five years.

“I’m a social science teacher and so I’ve always had an interest in politics and just community,” she said.

In her addition to her 29 years in education, Kilmer has also served on a number of boards and committees including the city’s community advisory committee, and is a member of the Prince Albert Raiders board.

When asked what she believes makes her a good candidate, Kilmer replied she is proactive, a good listener, dedicated to the community, and believes strongly in team approach.

“What I do believe is everybody can work together. They just need to listen and listen with an open heart and open ears,” she said. “Prince Albert is a small community and once you are elected in a ward you are working for all of Prince Albert.”

Obviously this fall’s election campaign is a bit more unique and challenging given the current situation with COVID-19. Kilmer confirmed she still plans to go door knocking, while following social distancing protocols

“I still have to get out there, people don’t know me so I want them to put a face and name together, and I want to put a face and name together, and hear them,” she said.

Kilmer thus far runs unopposed as the current council seat for Ward 7 is occupied by Dennis Nowoselsky, who is campaigning for the Mayor’s chair.

The municipal election day has been scheduled for Nov. 9.
