Torch parade ‘unofficially’ kicks off Sask. Winter Games
The first half of the two-part Saskatchewan Winter Games torch relay kicked off Thursday afternoon in downtown North Battleford.
Organizers and 30 youths representing 15 local schools took part in the march, which began at the Civic Centre. Many community members braved the frigid cold to wave and cheer along the route, before the procession ended at City Hall. North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater said a few words about what the torch relay represents.
“When I think of sport, what I think of the most is people coming together, teamwork and working towards common goals,” Bater said. “I think it’s really poignant today that so many young people got together, worked together, and got this torch to City Hall this afternoon.”
“I think it’s a real testemant to the strength of our community that we’re coming together,” Bater added. “This is a great time to be displaying unity.”
