Some ‘Breast Friends’ gathered at the Travelodge in Prince Albert to talk about cancer.

The Prince Albert chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society had its annual Cancer Awareness Luncheon on Wednesday.

As part of the luncheon the society invited some special guests to the event to speak about cancer awareness and raising money for cancer.

Cecile Halyk, Jeannie Johnson and Nat Dunlop directors for the ‘Breast Friends’ line of cookbooks visited today and Halyk spoke to the ladies in attendance about her experiences with the ‘Breast Friends’ crew and writing the books.

“We had been asked to speak and sell our books, and I’ve just told the story to a group of beautiful women here at the Canadian Cancer Society gathering and luncheon,” said Halyk.

Halyk added the book sales after the luncheon were phenomenal.

“People are pretty enthusiastic about the cause,” said Halyk. “It is a wonderful cause, the proceeds stay here in Prince Albert with the Canadian Cancer Society. The proceeds stay where the books are sold for the most part.”

During the luncheon Halyk announced to the group that the ‘Breast Friends’ cookbooks had raised nearly $1.4 million in funding for cancer research.

The group’s newest endeavor, ‘Breast Wishes for the Men in Our Lives’, recently won the Top Charity Cookbook in North America Gourmand Award in Paris, beating Michelle Obama’s cookbook ‘American Grown’, according to Halyk.

Despite all this Halyk said it’s important for her to continue to visit small communities and help with grassroots projects.

“Just in local needs, everything from palliative care to chemotherapy and fusion pumps to prosthesis for cancer patients, it’s heartwarming to see the reaction,” said Halyk. “Today we’ve experienced that when people are buying books like crazy.”

The women are original from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, but have travelled all over Canada and been featured on various television series including Dragon’s Den.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of one of the many ‘Breast Friends’ line of cookbooks you can pick up copies at Canadian Tire and Pharmasave in Prince Albert or visit the site here, all proceeds are donated to various cancer-related projects.
