No injuries but total loss expected in Battleford house fire

While no one was injured, a home in Battleford is expected to be a total loss after a fire Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews arrived at the home around 1 p.m. on First Ave. W and 28 St. W in the town.

Fire Chief Larry Gabruch said the fire started in the ground floor mechanical room and ran along a back wall, spreading onto the second floor and into the attic.

Due to the origin of the fire, Gabruch said firefighters were unable to directly extinguish the blaze, forcing them into a defensive exterior attack. Further, he said there were fears the fire had weakened the integrity of the main floor, limiting firefighters ability to be sent in to suppress the flames.

“We made the right call,” he said. “There were several [floor joists] that had been completely burnt through.”

He said it is likely one of the most severe in town structure fires they have dealt with this calendar year.

Eighteen firefighters attended the call and remained on scene well past 5:30 p.m.

No neighbouring homes were affected and while the owners were not home at the time, they were earlier in the day but had left for a brief period.

“Other than the material loss we consider this a pretty good day. There was no loss of life or injuries to our firemen,” he added.
