Feel good food raises funds for BTEC

Feel good foods were on the menu for the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre (BTEC) on Tuesday as they raised funds to make their clients feel more at home.

BTEC is a non-profit program for adults with special needs, and currently has approximately 75 clients in their care.

Direct Support Workers such as Connie Loken and Shelley Mandin take their clients out into the community to participate in a variety of activities including bowling, picnics and an art program.

“We just try to get out there and let people see who we are and what we’re about, and the people we serve,” Mandin said.

In the past, BTEC and their clients have also supported organizations by participating in events such as garbage cleanup for Earth Day.

Lokin and Mandin prepared homemade bannock tacos to sell at the fundraiser, and BTEC’s client committee will decide what the proceeds will go toward.

“We try to help them to let their voice be heard,” Loken said. “We use the money raised for items for them that aren’t necessarily just normal funded items, but extra things.”

In the past, extra funds have allowed BTEC to purchase things like outdoor patio furniture, cable service and karaoke machines for their clients.
