Jon Mirasty’s lifelong love of hockey is one of his many passions, and this year he’s got a unique opportunity to play for a semi-pro league in Quebec.

This coming weekend, the Flying Dust First Nation man will hit the ice as a part of the Trois-Rivières Draveurs of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey. The season kicks off on Friday, Oct. 6.

“I’ll be flying out Thursdays, I’ll play Friday and Saturday and fly home Sundays,” he said. “I’m going to remain living here. I don’t know if I’ll make every weekend, but it’s an opportunity for me to continue playing.”

This schedule will allow him to spend weeks with his family and at his day job as a teacher at Kopahawakenum School.

He said thankful for the unique opportunity and the support of his family, students, colleagues and community. He added he’s looking forward to be able to share his story with youth in the community.

“The kids will be able to follow me as well,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for me to go over there, get into better shape, and play the game that I love.”

In the past, Mirasty played with the Western Hockey League, America Hockey League and the Kontinental Hockey League. His son Tristan Mirasty is also playing in the bantam program at Notre Dame in Wilcox, so the whole family is setting up for a busy winter.
