The Town of Battleford was able to recognize a hefty savings for its ice plant replacement.
Council approved hiring Lyle V. Schell Construction for the Battleford arena project at its recent meeting, at a cost of $671,888, significantly less than the $1.6 million budgeted, and the lowest of six bids received. The highest bid received was $805,400.
In his report, Parks and Recreation Department Director Jordan Schechtel said Associated Engineering recommended the town factor in an additional minimum of 10 per cent in contingency funds for the project in case there was a need for asbestos remediation or repairs to the roof are required. Schechtel said there are also construction costs for the project to add on so he estimated the total cost would likely come in at about $830,000.
In January council approved allocating up to $1.6 million in the budget to replace the existing ice plant. Administration indicated at that time it was more efficient to replace the ice plant than to continue funding repairs. The change also required the switch to a type of refrigerant that meets environmental requirements.
Mayor Ames Leslie said the town will save roughly $800,000 in savings from the original estimated budget amount.
"It's a tremendous work; to save half the cost of replacement is pretty big," Leslie said.
Leslie added the contractor in the project who works in the area has also completed some work on the town's West Park subdivision project.
"He's been doing some nice work on the West Park project,"Leslie said. "So it would be good to see it continue on into the rink (project)."
The mayor said the project to replace the Battleford arena ice plant will start as soon as the current hockey season is over, and should be completed by the time the next hockey season starts in the fall or when the rink is booked for use again.
