Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame inducts 2018 class

The Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony has come and gone.

The Saturday ceremony was held at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford, and the room was filled in honouring the 12 individuals, one team, one community and one family entering the Hall this year.

The night began with the grand march of the inductees, the national anthem sang by Ron Dewald, and an address by President and CEO, Jane Shury. The MC for the evening was Dan Reynish, formerly of CBC. Former inductees were acknowledged, along with a moment of silence for those who passed throughout the last year.

Shury told battlefordsNOW the night ran smoothly, and how much she loved the support.

“We had a very good crowd, although less than other years, it was a good crowd,” she said. “We had a wonderful guest speaker, inductor and MC, which always helps the program. The participation by everyone was great.”

After Reynish’s speech, the 50-50 game was then played. This year, the Sask Baseball Hall of Fame decided to change it up and went with a “Head or Tails” style 50-50. Everyone participating stood up, and would either place their hand on their head or rear, indicating heads or tails. A member of the Carlyle Cardinals, the 2018 inducted team, won, and Shury was shocked when she heard what he did with his winnings, which was $1,000.

“We certainly appreciated the support from all those who attended, but the 50-50 game resulted in a very good amount of money that was made,” she said. “The money that was won by Jay Meyers from Carlyle, donated back his 50 per cent back to the Sask Baseball Hall of Fame.”

Following a 20-minute break, the 2018 gold sponsors were honoured, as well as the 2018 Special Merit Award winners, Access Communications and Dave Dekker, as well as CTV, presented to Lorne Harasen.

The next event, was the highlight of the night, Shury said.

“The highlight always is the induction of those selected,” she said. “The families and friends that were there sharing this with them, they all appreciated it as we appreciated their support as well.”

Reynish introduced every single inductee, including the family, team and town. Shury then made the closing remarks, and ending the night was the singing of Take Me Out to the Ball Game by all in attendance.

Shury said there are many people to thank, but the work put in by the volunteers during the celebration is something that she always is grateful for, and grateful to see.
