As the legalization of cannabis grinds closer in Canada, there are big business moves being made in the North Battleford cannabis retail industry.

Fire & Flower has announced it has entered into a binding agreement to acquire North Battleford CannabisCo, a company held by James Davey, the president and CEO of Curativa Cannabis, a division of Envirosafe Chemicals Canada.

North Battleford CannabisCo received approval to operate a licenced retail outlet in North Battleford and is anticipated to be one of only a handful of stores in the province ready to serve customers Wednesday.

“We are pleased to select Fire & Flower as the cannabis retailer of choice to continue the historic progress we have made with our licensed cannabis retail shop,” Davey said in a news release. “We are confident to entrust Fire & Flower’s conscious philosophy and eloquent sophistication to provide cannabis to consumers in the community of North Battleford.”

Davey said the divestiture will allow him the opportunity to focus on “cannabis growth and production as a licenced producer.”

The deal is expected to close on or about Oct. 18, following which the shop will operate under the Fire & Flower banner. The acquisition is conditional on North Battleford CannabisCo commencing operations as a licenced cannabis retailer and receiving all required approvals.

“Like all Fire & Flower shops, the one in North Battleford will follow a robust security protocol to ensure the highest standards of safety for the community,” according to the release, “including a two-step age verification process to prohibit purchases by minors, programs to promote road safety, and extensive community engagement.”

Fire & Flower said it is actively developing cannabis retail stores in Alberta and Saskatchewan to begin sales on Oct.17 and is pursuing additional opportunities to obtain cannabis retail licenses in Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba. The company currently holds a retail permit in Yorkton.

The North Battleford location will open Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony set before opening. Thereafter, regular store hours will be Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
