Knitters donate hundreds of blankets to Christmas hamper program

Not only will recipients of Christmas hampers from the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre have full stomachs this holiday season, they will have warm hearts and warm hands.

A local knitting group, which goes by Crochet, Knit and Natter online, have donated between 200 and 300 handcrafted blankets to fill hampers this holiday season for those in need.

The group has knitted charity items for the past number of years, making 132 toques for the Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program and over 300 for Kids First last year.

“We are just a bunch of women who love yarn and like to do stuff,” founder Vistara Sidebottom said.

A dedicated group of around eight to 12 gather each Tuesday night at Porta Bella restaurant to join in fellowship and fun. The group formed four years ago as an offshoot of a yarn bombing project of public spaces in North Battleford.

“We have made friends with one another but everyone here has been involved with community organizations in one stripe or another over the years so this is just one more thing we all do,” Sidebottom added.

Sidebottom said the group is always looking for donations of yarn, be it full balls or any lingering string.
